Abstract
Accessible and well-designed public charging points are key elements towards the wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), highlighting the need to understand user preferences. This study examines public charging choices of 300 EV users and 288 non-EV users in Great Britain through a stated choice experiment and latent class modelling. Results revealed two distinct segments within each user group. Among EV users, a larger segment prioritised charging price, while a smaller one valued waiting time, charging speed, convenience, available amenities, and high station ratings. By contrast, both non-EV segments remained sensitive to charging price and waiting time, including the larger service-oriented segment. These patterns align with Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation Theory, highlighting behavioural and socio-demographic variations in readiness to engage with public charging infrastructure. The findings provide practical guidance for developing more inclusive and targeted public charging infrastructure that improves user experiences, lowers adoption barriers, and supports the broader shift towards electric mobility.
