Abstract

Confocal laser scanning microscopy has been an invaluable instrument for three-dimensional visualization and quantitative characterization of microbial biofilms with broad applications in biomedical research, environmental monitoring and industrial processes. Despite the popularity of confocal laser scanning microscopy biofilm studies, an in-depth review of the global research landscape and emerging trends is lacking. To explore the development of this field, we conducted a bibliometric analysis based on the records in the Web of Science Core Collection. Key contributors, research hotspots and the evolution of thematic directions were identified through citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis and temporal trend analysis. The results demonstrate a marked increase in confocal laser scanning microscopy biofilm publications over time, suggesting increasing scientific interest in advanced imaging technologies. The research hotspots have shifted from basic characterization of biofilm structure to multidisciplinary applications like hyperspectral imaging, automated image acquisition, machine learning-assisted image analysis, and data-driven modeling of microbial behavior. Moreover, the increasing cooperation between institutions and countries is a sign of the growing global impact of research on confocal laser scanning microscopy. This study represents the first extensive bibliometric overview of the applications of confocal laser scanning microscopy for microbial biofilm research.
