Abstract

To enhance the optoelectronic applications of photoluminescent metal complexes it is essential to understand the nuanced relationship between ligand structure(s) and complex properties. This review of relatively recent results from the research group discusses several heterocyclic ligand architectures that can be used to control functionality, and optimize the targeted application, of luminescent metal complexes. Photoactive complexes based upon Ir(III), Pt(II) and Cr(III) are discussed, including details of synthesis, fundamental photophysical attributes and the relationship between molecular form and function. Highlighted applications include triplet-triplet annihilation energy upconversion, cellular bioimaging and DNA binding.
