Abstract

This chapter intervenes into analyses of ‘media tourism’, or ‘transmedia tourism’, as the chapter prefers, by reviewing existing debates on this topic and arguing that memory has frequently been omitted from these discussions. The chapter argues for re-introducing memory studies perspectives to the analysis of transmedia spaces and places by summarizing Pierre Nora’s concept of lieux d’memoire, and accounting for why these ideas have either been overlooked or refined in previous transmedia tourism inquiry. Arguments favouring expansion of the current research agenda for transmedia tourism are developed throughout. These positions include advancing analysis by incorporating existing perspectives concerning how memory is strategically constructed in transmedia franchises. Additionally, the chapter argues for pursuing a broader, interdisciplinary research agenda that acknowledges how planning and urban or cultural geography can enhance analysing how sites of transmedia tourism are either assigned or denied significance at institutional and cultural levels.
