Abstract
The Etruscans have traditionally been treated as a special, mysterious case on the margins of the classical world. In fact, they represent a classic case of state formation that deserves to be compared on a global scale, albeit like other Mediterranean civilizations centered on a maritime rather than terrestrial network. This chapter thus focuses on the themes of historical development, political geography, identity, cuisine, and trade that permit such a comparison. Readers should look elsewhere for a comprehensive exegesis of the artistic styles and material culture that were particular to the Etruscan civilization, although often seen as a pale reflection of the Greek and Roman worlds.
