Abstract

The UK National Edge AI Hub is a large-scale initiative advancing the design and deployment of artificial intelligence systems at the network edge, with strong alignment to service-oriented computing. The Hub integrates academic, industry, and public-sector stakeholders to develop modular and interoperable AI capabilities that can be orchestrated across heterogeneous, resource-constrained environments. It promotes distributed intelligence through federated learning and adaptive lifecycle management, enabling decomposition and dynamic composition of AI functionalities close to data sources. This supports low-latency, privacy-preserving, and resilient service delivery across sectors such as transport, healthcare, and energy. The research addresses key challenges in service-oriented computing systems, including coordination under intermittent connectivity, quality-of-service trade-offs, and integration of AI-driven services into critical infrastructures. Trust, security, and governance are treated as first-class concerns, aligning with the principles of reliability, accountability, and policy compliance. Through co-design with stakeholders and validation in real-world testbeds, the Hub demonstrates how Edge AI can be realised as a scalable ecosystem of intelligent services, supporting flexible, context-aware, and sustainable digital infrastructure.
