Abstract
Background The Need for Change: In the UK alone, the annual cost of blindness is £25 billion. Eye care services are overstretched, with the largest backlog of any specialty. Some people become irreversibly visually impaired whilst waiting for appointments. Sight loss increases the risk of numerous health issues, including falls, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Methods In response to these challenges, we have established the Centre for Vision Services Research, a dedicated vision research centre that will drive the transformation of services and global innovation in eye care. Funded by Health and Care Research Wales for 5 years, it is supported by government, industry, the voluntary sector and professional bodies. Our work is timely and essential for improving vision services worldwide. Results Our Themes: Our work is prioritised into Strategic and Cross-Cutting themes: Strategic Themes: Reducing Hospital Eye Service Waiting Lists Transforming Sight Impairment and Rehabilitation Pathways Advancing Person-Centred and Patient-Reported Outcome Measure Optimising Care Intervals, Risk Profiling, and New Technologies Improving Vision Care for Vulnerable Populations Cross-Cutting Themes: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI): Addressing disparities in access and outcomes across diverse populations Information and Education: Empowering patients and their families, professionals, and stakeholders Conclusion The new Centre will deliver impactful research to help better understand what works and leads to good outcomes for those with vision impairment. Our work will: Inform policy and practice development Underpin the development of new interventions Provide knowledge to support the implementation of interventions at scale Inform those educating the public, people with living experience and the workforce
