Abstract
The aim of the research reported here was to examine the effects of combinations of occupational factors on objective measures of performance and health. A secondary analysis of the Bristol Stress and Health at Work data base showed that accident rates were greater when combinations of noise and nightwork were present than when the factors were considered in isolation. Indeed, accidents increased linearly with the number of negative occupational factors reported. Analyses of performance in the laboratory also showed that combinations of factors were associated with greater impairments. Further research using objective indicators is being conducted and these methodologies are briefly described.
