Abstract
In retrospect, the 1980s proved to be the most innovative decade in the GDR in artistic terms. In this decade, for example, Adolf Endler's writings and poetics successfully countered Socialist Realism. In his prose he created a subterranean world of an often bizarre nature, whereas his no less unsettling, at the same time, comical poetry drew heavily on the aesthetics of the Paris-based Surrealists, most notably André Breton. This essay focuses both on Endler's preoccupation with Surrealism and the continuation of this avant-garde project after reunification in 1990. It will be argued that the persistence of promoting surrealist poetics signals Endler's contribution to the important process of private and collective 'Verganenheitsbewältigung'. The poet demonstrates a politics of memory in which he fuses past and present. The new poems not only map the author's career but, at the same time, help to confront the reader with the hybrid framework of the complex cultural environments during the thirty years of Endler's stunning career.
