Abstract

This book is a German translation of one of the most important sutras of Mahayana Buddhism, a text which had a strong influence on the East Asian cultures of China and Japan. Unlike the former German translation by Margarete von Borsig, which mainly followed the established Japanese reading of the text, Deeg’s version is based on Kumarajiva’s original Chinese text. Another specific feature of the translation, which distinguishes it from the most recent English translation, by Burton Watson, is the fact that it was made in comparison with the available versions in Sanskrit and the text of the earlier Chinese translation by Dharmaraksa / Zhu Fahu (3rd century) in order to clear ambiguities and difficult passages in Kumarajiva’s work. The translation was published by the well-known academic publisher Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft in Darmstadt and is addressed to a general learned readership; this is the reason that few annotations are given in the main text. The introduction, which is mainly authored by the translator and only slightly stylistically revised by Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer, gives a historical introduction and an up-to-date bibliography of the most important literature on the Lotos Sutra. The translator added in the appendix a glossary of terms and names which gives the general reader definitions and explanations for Buddhist terms and names used in the translation and enables the more specialised reader (Buddhologist, Sinologist, etc.) to identify the corresponding Sanskrit, Chinese or Japanese terms.
