Abstract

We report the first simultaneous observations of an asteroid from 5 to 1100 microns, using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) on Mauna Kea. These observations have been combined with 10 and 20-micron observations of Ceres that span a solar phase angle range of -20 to +18 degrees to study the thermal properties of the regolith of Ceres. From these observations, we conclude that Ceres has a prograde rotation. The thermal properties of the regolith, based on the submillimeter observations show, however, that the thermal properties of the regolith may be unusual, as has been reported by Conklin et al. (1977). The implications of this will be discussed.
