Abstract

Using a novel development of the Auston switch technique, ultrafast intramolecular photocurrents are for the first time directly observed on a collection of isolated polymer chains in solution with subnanosecond resolution. The polydiacetylenes used may undergo conformational changes with temperature which have a profound effect on the ability of the polymer to transport charge. The carrier range on the chain is obtained and the carrier velocity deduced from the shape of the transient.
