Abstract

European otters (Lutra lutra) typically lead a solitary lifestyle, except for the times when females are rearing cubs. Territorial ranges of individuals vary between 4 and 80 km (Kruuk, 1995) and communication between neighboring individuals is achieved mostly through olfactory signals (Trowbridge, 1983).
