Abstract
Charles Edward Stuart, also known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie” and “the Young Pretender,” was the grandson of James II, who had been deposed in the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688. Through the 1740s and 1750s, Charles was the focal point of Jacobite attempts to return the Stuart dynasty to the British throne. It was in this capacity that he led a daring insurrection that took him from Scotland into northern England in 1745–1746 before it was finally defeated.
