Abstract
Leadership research has so far neglected clusters as a particular context for leadership, whileresearch on clusters has hardly studied leading (in) networks or clusters. This paper fills thisdual gap in the abundant research on leadership on the one hand and networks/clusters on theother by investigating leadership of and in four photonics clusters in England, Scotland,Germany and the United States from a structuration perspective. The central contribution ofthe paper has two principal parts. The first considers the variety of leadership practicesobserved in the clusters and derives a typology of the various patterns and possibilities. Thesecond addresses the ways in which all such leadership practices are constrained and enabledby the structures they help to produce, reproduce, and transform. The paper concludes with a number of potential directions for future research on this important theme.
