Abstract
This paper reports on a study which examined pub lic awareness of the 1992 Drinkwise Wales campaign and its effect on alcohol-related knowledge and be haviour. Face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire were conducted with a representative sample of just over 1000 adults resident in Wales. The data showed that fewer respondents (23 per cent) had heard of Drinkwise Wales than of other health projects such as No Smoking Day and Heartbeat Wales. The most frequently cited source of infor mation about Drinkwise Wales was television. Those who had heard of Drinkwise Wales were more likely to be weekly drinkers and the majority had picked up the 'right' messages from the campaign, although women and older adults were more likely to attri bute erroneous messages to it. Self-reported knowl edge increase as a result of Drinkwise Wales was high, while a significant percentage claimed it had made them discuss their own or others' drinking and change their drinking habits.
