Abstract

Sulphur dioxide and its soluble compounds have a significant effect on fungi and leaf litter decomposition. In the field, application of sulphite solution at low a concentration (50 µM SO3 2 −) significantly reduced carbon dioxide evolution from sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) leaf litter and soil, and the effect lasted for about three days. In the laboratory, an equivalent concentration applied to leaf litter alone resulted in less inhibition of carbon dioxide (CO2) evolution lasting one day. Inhibitory effects of sulphite concentration (12.5, 25, 50 and 100 µM) on litter respiration increased with increasing sulphite concentration in laboratory experiments.
