Abstract
Mortality over a three-year period has been related to hæmatocrit in 18,740 women seen in a number of hæmatological surveys. There is evidence of a small increase in mortality in anæmic subjects, and of a distinct increase in mortality in subjects with hæmatocrit levels above about 46%. In the more anæmic women a higher than expected proportion of deaths were due to neoplasms, but there was a clear deficiency in the proportion of deaths due to cardiovascular disease. There is also evidence that cardiovascular disease was contributing disproportionately to the increased mortality at higher hæmatocrits.
