Abstract

In this paper I discuss how normative fan identity within an online community for fans of rock band R.E.M. is constructed through liberal intelligentsia “central values,” of the fans’ subcultural homology. Drawing on Henry Jenkins’s application of de Certeau’s “strategy” and “tactics” to fandom (1992), I show how normative behaviour in Murmurs is governed through strategies of power and how two strategies were successfully delegitimised through tactical resistance on the basis that they subverted subculturally homological values. I argue this occurred as both strategies ensured implicit norms that contradicted liberalist values of equality became visible, and exposed what Michel Foucault would term “governmentality” (1978).
