Abstract

The authors present numerical simulations illustrating two mechanisms of binary formation. In the first mechanism, protostellar discs form independently and then capture one another to form binary and multiple systems. In the second mechanism, a single protostellar disc becomes rotationally unstable due to the accretion of matter with high specific angular momentum, and breaks up into two or more pieces. Both mechanisms occur for a wide range of initial conditions.
