Abstract

This chapter examines the insights that may be gained from combining studies on power and process in organizations. It compares different approaches to process to examine how well they align with different views of power. It shows that there is considerable potential for a discursive view of power to contribute to performative or ‘strong’ process research, particularly in relation to: (1) the status of the ‘knowing’ subject and its role in initiating and guiding processes; and (2) how emergent processes stabilize sufficiently to produce recognizable, ‘known’ objects. The chapter sets out how, by considering power, future process research might be better adapted to examine the recursive production of practices, subjects and objects.
