Abstract

Bartlett critiques Hasan’s modelling of context within the theoretical architecture of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Focusing on the contextual vector of mode and its relationship with semantic and lexicogrammatical features of language in use, he employs Halliday’s “trinocular” approach to question the theoretical and practical suitability of conflating first- and second-order features of context within a single category and, drawing on ideas from wider sociolinguistics, advocates instead a multiscalar model that distinguishes between the first-order non-linguistic environment and the second-order linguistically-construed context. In this model language features are not activated by the environment except through the mediation of the second-order context, which is itself a response to the environment.
