Abstract
The drillship JOIDES Resolution left Guam Feb. 20, 1989, on Leg125 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Fifteen holes at nine sites were drilled between the deep ocean trenches and island-arc volcanoes of the Mariana and lzu-Bonin regions south of Japan. Drill sites 778-781 are on the Conical Seamount east of the Marianas, andesites 732-786 were drilled in the lzu-Sonin system. These drill sites are in areas known as forearc terranes. Those terranes overlie the shallowest parts of the subcuction zones, where lithosphere is being subducted into the mantle in a northwesterly direction at about 10 centimeters a vear. This subduction has been active since the Eocene (about 45 miilion years ago), creating a complex series of island arcs and marginal ocean basins across much of' the western Pacific.
