Abstract
Forum Public Space About the Place On the Boundary of the Urban City, next to the fertile low-land (Vega), just where urban geometries are replaced by rural ones, we propose a new landscape for events and celebrations. About the space and its construction Space is defined thanks to a flexible strategy based on the rural landscape nearby, defined by acequias, traditional irrigation channels of Arabic origin. The new space proposed lead and give shelter to the visitor, through the creation of a dynamic flow of spaces. Its surface is about eighteen marjales, the equivalent of 9000sqm. The marjal is a traditional surface unit of Arabic origin, already used on the crop fields of the rural countryside of Granada. The surface of the Patio de los Leones of the Alhambra Palace was designed in marjales. This public space was conceived as a carpet crossed by strength lines and channels, as the Vega was shaped through the centuries. This new landscape creates a new reality that enriches the dialogue between the city limits and the rural context. The carpet spread out onto two levels. The upper one is used as the entrance of this new space and for the development of reduced activities, while the lower level allows larger celebrations. This space could be understood as a new topographic map defined by strength lines in cracked continuity, which intensifies their movement at the slope of the two levels. These lines, built in corten steel, define the limits between the different materials, contains the vegetal topography made of colours and aromas, lead our steps and conduce the water courses. The lower level is a large surface surrounded by large trees and a marked slope to protect the space from the interferences of the highway. Near the main connection between the two levels, we can hear the sound of the water falling into a pond. The sound and the presence of water qualify our perceptions. It springs calmly sometimes, others it is vigorous and sonorous. The final aim of our project was to capture the essence of this intense territory defined by the limit and the dialogue between the urban and natural realms.
