Abstract
This article examines the career of the socialist, trade unionist and Welsh nationalist Huw T. Edwards, chairman of the Council for Wales during the 1950s. Edwards's career illustrates the dilemmas of being a socialist in a position of power, as well as the apparent contradictions of being both Welsh and British. The relationship between socialism, nationalism and power has been a theme in the history of labour and socialist movements worldwide. The article therefore aims both to extend the debate on Huw T. Edwards as an individual and to contribute to our understanding of socialist and labour movements more generally.
