Abstract

The music of Debussy and Ravel is often described in terms of its luxuriant orchestral colourism, harmonic sensuality and the exploration of sound as timbre, attributes considered quintessentially French. This article considers the distinctive character of French orchestral music from Debussy to Dutilleux through an investigating instrumental texture and sonority.
