Abstract
Paris has long been dubbed 'la ville lumière', a name evoking its role as a centre of ideas and enlightenment, a promised land of cultural opportunity attracting musicians, artists, intellectuals and creative thinkers of all kinds. This article explores the main developments in French music from 1900 to 1950 against a background of contemporary trends in the literary and visual arts.
