Abstract
This chapter explores how the recent experience of COVID-19 has placed challenges on leading healthcare systems globally. The word ‘crisis’ has become a woven thread of familiarity in daily conversation, in the media and within our places of work and home since the beginning of the pandemic. A collective approach using a shared structure of agreed aims and decisions enables coordination and communication and embeds positive behaviours for ensuring effective care is provided. Reflecting so far on leadership during this crisis, it is evident that globally there have been many different approaches with varied outcomes in terms of maintaining services and safety for patients. In leadership, in organisational culture and in the delivery of care, a compassionate, collective and inclusive and values-driven or focused approach is needed. The chapter considers what positive actions and strategies clinical leaders can take to support and encourage a return to some equilibrium for personal well-being.
