Abstract

This chapter delineates between management and leadership, because an awareness among clinicians as to when they are operating in leadership or management roles can help in ensuring that the most appropriate skill set is utilised, to achieve the best outcomes. It explores the skills required for each role and the need for education. The chapter addresses some of the controversies regarding healthcare leadership and management, and discusses the future for both roles. The Healthcare Leadership Model emphasises that leadership is not necessarily related to seniority within an organisation. The skills- based approach to management and leadership aligns with the need for educational programmes that aim to support participants in developing their leadership and management skills. The chapter provides evidence that management and leadership functions embodied in the same person, or within the same post, lead to values breach, confusion, conflict and diminished clinical and management effectiveness.
