Abstract

During clinical years at Cardiff Medical school, students are allocated Educational Supervisors (ES). ES’s sign off placements, explore students' personal reflections and provide overall feedback to aid development. Previously, there was one ES for each of the three placement blocks during academic years 3-5. In 2020-21, in response to evaluations undertaken of the CARER program1 and to provide more support during the coronavirus pandemic, all Year 3 students were allocated a single ES for the duration of their academic year. CARER is a longitudinal integrated clerkship in the community undertaken by a cohort from Year 3. They reported benefits from educational continuity provided by a single ES across the year. This study sought to investigate whether having the same ES for a longer duration enables medical students to form stronger professional relationships enhancing their development towards becoming independent clinicians.
