Abstract
Abstract Scholarly debates on heritages of trauma and death employ various sensory metaphors to discuss such cultural phenomena. Metaphors of Darkness, Dissonance or Deviation are introduced to enrich heritage definitions and discuss their fine differences. Where do these metaphors stem from? How do they affect the design management of such commemoration? Aiming to resolve a knot of academic and design metaphors, the paper turns to Cognitive Linguistics for new tools of analysis. It explores the experiential and cultural grounds of three sensory metaphors and shows how they shape the cognitive and material architectures of such commemoration, by analysing selective entries of the UK_Holocaust memorial competition. The paper identifies a paradigm shift in academic understanding which is also reflected in the design management of such heritages. It ultimately suggests that metaphors ‘we grieve by’ are prominent tools of empathic design and showcases how their study can contribute to academic and design debates. Keywords: sensory metaphors, heritage design, darkness, dissonance, deviation, holocaust.
