Abstract
This introductory chapter discusses how cities are implicated in the twin net-zero and digital transition. Low-carbon transition transforms the relationships between urban sectors and energy. The advent of ‘smart city’ adds the promise of leveraging digital technologies for accelerated decarbonisation. The notion of smart energy cities further encapsulates the trends where digitalisation and energy transition represent mutually supporting processes. The chapter also introduces each individual contribution to the book and outlines their common threads: the context-sensitive and contingent nature of urban energy transitions; complexities and uncertainties coming from the disruptive nature of the transitions; and the imperative of people-centrality and justice. It is argued that the varied urban contexts, the actual needs of people and places, and the notion of ‘just transition’ should be put at the heart of the theory and practice of urban climate governance.
