Abstract

The environmental advantages of pure nitrogen as an insulant for metalclad power systems have remained unexploited. It has yet to be shown whether the stringent IEC standards for high pressure gas insulation can be met by nitrogen: it is clear that IEC 62271-203:2022 requires a breakdown voltage which is at least 25% higher than the withstand test voltage and is also 450% above the phase voltage. Nonetheless this paper shows that the limited available test data on large nitrogen coaxialsystems can provide a physical basis to design coaxial systems of optimised conductor/enclosure dimensional ratio (d O/D O= 0.368) that may satisfy IEC specifications for the withstand voltage. These designs use a feasible N2pressure range of 0.5 — 0.8MPa at standard rated line voltages from 33kV to 400kV. Further test data on large systems are urgently needed.
