Abstract
Over the last 30 years, geographers have made significant contributions to understanding the relationships between religion and social welfare. This chapter reviews some of the recent debates and the varied theoretical commitments, geographies, and politics underpinning them. It then discusses four research avenues that offer critical new directions for geographers of religion and welfare: (i) spirituality in everyday austerity; (ii) political economic conditions for spiritual abuse; (iii) theological mobilities and social policy; and (iv) reparatory histories of religious welfare.
