Abstract

Changes that are taking place in the labour market are explored in depth by looking at the experiences of workers at the former Burberry factory in Rhondda - the authors Paul Blyton and Jean Jenkins find that workers not only lost earning potential when they lost their jobs, but their saw their whole quality of life affected. This readable and striking report shows that workers not only lost relatively well-paid and secure jobs when they were made redundant from Burberry, finding only part-time, temporary and casual work as an alternative, but they also lost the camaraderie, skills and self-esteem they had developed on the Burberry factory floor. The impact of change in people's livelihoods is felt not only in household income, terms and conditions of employment, but in the every day lives of households who may not know from one week to the next whether they have a job or what its hours might be.
