Abstract

Dutilleux has often expressed a certain reticence about being described as a quintessentially French composer and has emphasised the importance of foreign influences in his music. These include those of Poland, a cultural direction with which it is logical for Dutilleux to feel close due to his own maternal Polish forbears. Dutilleux has often remarked on the significance of the well-established aesthetic kinship between Polish and French composers, which in his case was directly perpetuated through his long friendship with Witold Lutosławski, an association that endured more than forty years. This article traces the development of Dutilleux's friendship with Lutos_awski and investigates stylistic and technical parallels in their music to reveal a range of aesthetic links through a common musical ancestry.
