Abstract

The 'One Wales' government has an ambitious vision of a Welsh economy based on high skilled and high quality jobs. This article presents evidence on which future progress towards this goal may be judged. It tracks the skills requirements of jobs using a variety measures, analyses the alignment of qualifications supply and demand, and examines several different aspects of job quality. These issues are investigated using large-scale surveys of those employed in Britain as a whole. These surveys were carried out in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2006. The results they produce for Wales are compared with other parts of Britain. The article therefore provides baseline measures on which to judge a central plank of the 'One Wales' government's skills and employment strategy.
