Abstract
Cities in Eastern Europe have recently experienced extraordinary transformations associated with the politico-economic transition from state socialism to neoliberal capitalism. This chapter problematizes this experience and outlines some research fields demanding further investigation. It argues for the importance of proper ‘worlding’ post-socialist cities for a better understanding of the nature of global urbanization. It shows that post-socialist transition is not merely a set of area-based reforms, but also has planetary significance, leading to the global triumph of neoliberalism. It then discusses how post-socialist cities represent a particularly fruitful lens to explore the entanglements of the urban and the ideological, including the workings of capitalism in reshaping societies and spatialities, and the centrality of the urban in the production of new social relationships and class transformation. Keywords: post-socialist city, post-socialist transition, Eastern Europe, Russia
