Abstract
Extensive geophysical surveys examining the remaining open areas overlying Isca have revealed a great deal of new information about the layout of the legionary fortress at Caerleon. Obtaining a more detailed and reliable plan of the Second Augustan Legion’s base and the civilian canabae around it is an essential part of understanding Isca, and about 15% of the internal area of the fortress was surveyed in 2006 and 2007. Eight barrack blocks, three military granaries and a horreum-style courtyard store building have been located in the dextral side of the praetentura, while a previously unknown monumental complex of buildings around a central courtyard, probably a fabrica or workshop, together with the ends of at least five barrack blocks, were discovered in the dextral part of the retentura.
