Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is not only to draw attention to the recent (i.e., < 20 years) use of Lewis-acidic zeolites as heterogeneous catalysts for liquid-phase processing but also to emphasize the diversity of species that can be held in these structures. The challenges encountered in regard to characterization of these heterogeneous active sites, in addition to the influence of catalytic operation on their distribution and stability, are also covered. To highlight these issues, a key case study from the recent literature—the unique catalytic performance of Sn-substituted zeolite β for the conversion of oxygenated substrates, such as biomass-derived sugars—is discussed. The aim of this is not to act as an exhaustive review in the topic (readers will be directed throughout the text to thorough review articles or complimentary book chapters for further information) but to set the scene so that the pertaining challenges in the field can be discussed in the final section of the chapter.
