Abstract

Around our coasts lie secret undersea gardens. Revealed only at the lowest of tides, these gardens are formed by a special marine plant called seagrass. Seagrass is vital to our coast, providing a home for marine life, including fish species like cod and plaice, and absorbing large amounts of carbon. But globally, seagrasses are being lost at a rate of 1.5% per year. Seagrass meadows are shallow near shore habitats that are easy to access and so lend themselves well to exploration. Methodological and technological developments have provided clear pathways for scientists and non-scientists alike to engage with seagrass. The increasing use of online tools has created opportunities to collect and submit as well as help process and analyse data. Seagrass Spotter is a phone application that is working towards supporting the collection of global data on the distribution, health and status of seagrass meadows.
