Abstract
In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the application of a material science approach to the study of rock deformation, and to the interpretation of associated phenomena, such as microstructures and crystallographic fabrics. The Leiden conference was designed to bring together as many as possible of the people active in this field; not only geologists but also material scientists from other disciplines. In each section an attempt was made to balance review and new research, and further, to balance experimental and field data oriented approaches. The conference was organized by the Tectonics Department of the Geological Institute of the University of Leiden (Prof. dr. H.J. Zwart) and this volume comprises most of the papers presented plus invited contributions from participants unable to attend. In addition to presenting recent research it is intended to give an assessment of the "state of the art" whereby fabric, microtextural and microtectonic information can be utilized in structural geology.
