Abstract
Going abroad can be one of the most challenging experiences for students in Higher Education. Our goal as teachers of the languages they are learning is to equip them with the necessary linguistic and cultural tools to face this challenge and reduce the cultural shock they experience when moving to a different country; but how can we achieve this while making it an interesting and attractive task to students? The Spanish movie Ocho apellidos vascos not only offers a unique opportunity to explore linguistic differences between the Basque and the Andalusian communities among others but also allows us to highlight the perception of Spanish stereotypes within the country unlikely to be known by most of our students. Through investigating these stereotypes, we encourage them to be aware of the diversity and complexity of the Spanish regions, deepen their knowledge of Spanish cultural references and develop their critical skills prior to moving to the receiving country. This paper aims to provide an analysis of several parts of the movie together with activities developed by the Spanish Language team in Cardiff that can be used within the classroom in order to serve a dual purpose: To introduce students to Spanish cinema and culture while enhancing their experiences abroad.
