Abstract
The colonisation of the land by plants and the origin of vascular plants were events that changed the face of our planet and are as captivating to the imagination as they are controversial. The plants themselves were morphologically very simple and their fossils lack the aesthetic appeal of the famous fronds of the Coal Measures, yet quite remarkable cellular detail can be observed at the microscopic level.
