Abstract
Looks at the international regulation of whaling, focusing on the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling 1946 and the role of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in developing policies on whaling, and the global moratorium on commercial whaling introduced in 1986. Comments on the impasse in the IWC as parties have divided along anti-whaling and pro-whaling lines, the sources of acrimony, the loopholes in the prohibitive regulation of hunting and the future of the global moratorium.
