Abstract
Increasing awareness of Climate Change and the rising price of fossil fuels have resulted in a rapid growth in demand for various types of renewable energy, including tidal energy. To date only a few small scale tidal schemes are in operation worldwide. One of the most attractive sites for the deployment of tidal range schemes is along the UK Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary. This region experiences the second largest tidal range in the world, often exceeding 10 m in the basin. This paper investigates the impacts of the proposed tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay. Previous studies have highlighted the potential significance of momentum conservation when modelling the outflowing jet from the turbines. Therefore, this study focuses on accurate representation of the turbines and maintaining momentum conservation. Here a finite difference method was used for the hydraulic simulations, and the momentum associated with the flow through the turbines was represented as an additional term in the momentum equation. Simulations were performed both in 2D and 3D. A noticeable difference was observed in the velocity profile predicted by the two models in close proximity to the turbines, highlighting the importance of implementing a more detailed 3D model
