Abstract
In ore geology, the degree of congruence is a measure of the spatial coincidence between the potentially economic and non-economic constituents of a rock. In the past, “congruent” has been regarded as synonymous with “syngeneic”, but increased understanding of the mechanisms in possible ore-forming processes has shown that attempted temporal classifications of ore genesis are specious. The present trend towards more mechanistic genetic interpretations permits, and often requires, the presence of both congruent and non-congruent features in individual deposits. The relationship between the degree of congruence, which is often a highly subjective parameter, and genesis is therefore tenuous.
