Abstract

The first talk is by Dawn Pickering (Physiotherapist, Senior Lecturer and part time PhD student) whose PhD is abbreviated to ‘VOCAL’. Dawn’s research has explored participation in recreational activities with children and young people with cerebral palsy - to find out about the emotional well-being impact from their level of participation. Participants were aged 9- 16 years with walking and talking difficulties. There have been some great opportunities but people’s attitudes towards disabled people is a barrier and not adapting environments and equipment to meet their needs. Her research aims to make recommendations to health, social care and 3rd sector providers so improvements can be made. Dawn trained as a physiotherapist in Birmingham and worked in hospitals and community paediatrics in Wales. Dawn completed an MSc in Child Health then moved into Higher Education. She is committed to developing healthcare practitioners who show empathy, care and compassion. Dawn was involved as a volunteer in the new Race Running Dragons club for children with a range of disabilities in Cardiff. Dawn’s aim in this diversity talk is to help attendees think about ways to adapt recreational activities for disabled people to enhance their well-being.
