Abstract

Most humans perform a wide variety of actions using their hands every day without devoting time and energy to considering how they perform these actions. In this article we review how the ability to perform various hand and arm actions develops in the first few years after birth. We consider manual motor development in a broad context, including a discussion of the biological underpinning and brain correlates as well as links to sensory development and other developmental domains.
