Abstract
The June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20), marked the latest milestone in international community efforts to deal holistically with global environmental issues. This chapter gives a general overview of the manner in which Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) counries have addressed environmental problems since the 1992 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro. The focus is on climate change, deforestation, biofuels and biodiversity. In addition, this chapter outlines Rio+20 negotiations and discusses the role played by LAC nations with regards to the final outcome.
